The 3 Little Pigs: A Tale of First Time Homebuyers
Once upon a time, in Des Forest [French for “the forest”] lived 3 little pigs.
Everyone knows this story: 3 piglet siblings leave home to set out on their own.
One built a house of straw.
One built a house of sticks.
One built a house of bricks.
Everyone knows that a big bad wolf comes through town huffing, puffing, and blowing everyone’s house down.
(Except, when he gets to the house of bricks - it’s built so well, reinforced with extra-strong cement, and includes a cellar for extra food storage, that no amount of huffing and puffing - or puffing and huffing - will blow the house down.)
Everyone doesn’t know why the piggies built a house of straw, sticks, and bricks in the first place.
This is that story.
Piggy #1 just wanted the fast option.
He wanted to spend time becoming an astronaut - not reading the fine print of his mortgage.
As he was walking a sign with a spaceship caught his eye.
“Spaceship mortgage. Need a house? We can get you one quick!”
10 minutes later, Piggy #1 walked out of Spaceship Mortgage with the straw he needed to build his new house.
Boom. done. Moving on.
Piggy #2 bumped into a schoolmate, Rabbit the Real Estate agent.
As Piggy #2 asked about the housing market, Rabbit referred Piggy #2 to her brother for help with payment options.
“Based on what you said, tell Rabbit to help you find a ham-some bungalow in town.”
Rabbit had just the thing: thick logs.
But when the time came for Piggy #2 to sign on the dotted line - it turned out, he didn't have the coins for thick logs.
Instead, Piggy #2 ended up with a smaller bundle of sticks.
Piggy #3 was looking at houses in his dream neighborhood when he walked past a door that read: "Neighborhood Lender. Where dollars make sense for your new home.”
Inside, Piggy #3 met Owl the Mortgage Originator, who grew up from a hatchling in the very same neighborhood.
"I’m looking for a new home. Can you help me?” Piggy #3 said.
“Well, little Piggy - it's what I do. Show me your papers. I need to see your job history and the coins in your account.”
Piggy #3 left and came back with what Owl asked for.
“What a hoot! Based on these papers and counting your coins, I’ll fill out a form that says you can get a big pile of bricks.” Owl said.
“Thanks for looking out for me!” Said Piggy #3.
Now we're caught up to when the big bad wolf comes to town and blows their houses down with just a few huffs and puffs.
Well... not all their houses.
The wolf is hunched over gasping for breath and yet the brick house is still standing.
The 3 little piggies cheered.
But why did the brick house outlast the wolf's huffing and puffing?
Because the wolf wasn't really the wolf.
And the brick house wasn't really a brick house.
The brick house is a house Piggy #3 could afford.
He understood what he was committing to with the size, shape, and cost of the brick.
He was comfortable in the brick because he knew he had extra coins available to stock up on food, supplies, and more bricks if needed.
The wolf is the economy. Huffing and puffing - blowing things down if they aren't stable and secure.
Forget the cute bedtime story - you want a house of bricks.
